3 Helpful Tips for the Family on Joining a Senior Living Community

Moving your loved one into a senior living community is a big adjustment, for both the senior and their family. Maybe Mom lived with you for the past 3 years, or you stopped by dads house on the way home from work everyday? What happens now that they’ve become settled into their new home in a senior living community?

Moving your loved one into a senior living community is a big adjustment, for both the senior and their family. Maybe Mom lived with you for the past 3 years, or you stopped by Dad’s house on the way home from work every day. What happens now that they’ve become settled into their new home in a senior living community?

Often, when a resident moves in, it’s because the family has realized their loved one needs more care than they are able to provide, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to let go of that caregiver role.

As you settle into your new but familiar role as the daughter or son, know that there are an abundance of opportunities to stay involved in your loved one’s life in a Senior Living Community!

Northbridge tip – you should definitely stop in for a meal prepared by our Culinary Directors, your taste buds will thank you!

Here are 3 ways Northbridge works to create a welcoming environment for the family of a resident moving into a community:

1. Family visits

We encourage you to visit as much, or as little, as you like! Location is a big factor when choosing an assisted living community – check out our blog, What to Know Before Researching Senior Living Online, to learn more. You most likely chose the location of the community based on if it was on the way home from work, or near your house. Or maybe on how far it was from your house – don’t worry, we don’t judge. After your first few visits to a community you will realize that our associates are stopping to say hi to you and are telling you all about the programs that your family is participating in. You’ll start meeting your loved one’s new friends and might even be told that mom or dad are busy when you stop by – don’t take it personally, you haven’t been to Happy Hour at our community – it’s a can’t miss event!

2. Open lines of communication

Do you have questions about mom or dad’s care plan? Are you curious about what programs they are taking part in? Have concerns about them sticking to a diet? You are always welcome to connect with our team of dedicated directors to be sure all of your questions are answered. We will also be sure to reach out to you with any changes we notice or anything  you should be kept in the loop on. The longer your loved one is a resident, the more comfortable you will feel connecting with our directors about any questions or concerns you may have. You can learn more about the Directors at all of our communities by visiting our Meet the Team page. Click here to meet the directors at our newest community, The Mariner Marblehead!

3. Invitation to Events

A little known fact about senior living communities, we love a good theme and we throw a great party! We often have special celebrations where we invite families to celebrate with their loved ones and enjoy food prepared by our talented culinary teams! If you would like to join mom/dad in an Artists In Residence Signature Program, just ask and we will do our best to accommodate the request. Want to experience Happy Hour? Reach out to the Engagement Director and ask when the next one is; we love for our families to experience the amazing engagement opportunities available to our residents!
