How long have you been working in Senior Living and what first made you interested in the field?

Joining The Mariner Marblehead was my first time working in Senior Living. I do admit, I had been curious about working in the sector for a while but there were no communities that I knew about that intrigued me. I thought I wouldn’t be able to practice my art at the level I’ve been accustomed to and be challenging at the same time to learn new things. I was wrong. The Mariner offered me an environment I wanted to identify with and a clientele that relates to the various menu options I enjoy creating and serving. I am kept on my toes each day by residents and their guests who require my team and I to cater to their diverse cultural and eclectic tastes, as well as their respective dietary and lifestyle needs. I no longer just cook with love, I cook with love and purpose!

What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?

There is so much I get to learn from all these brilliant residents who were once the movers and shakers of yesterday in their respective fields. I really enjoy the stories they tell me about their past, the curiosity they have and the appreciation they express to associates. My favorite thing though is the relationships I have formed with both the residents and fellow associates. I’m not saying it’s all gravy and sunshine, but It’s awesome waking up and coming to work each day to join a wonderful crew in a great company.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Culinary Director?

People assume they would be limited in what they can do, which couldn’t be further from the truth based on my experience so far.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?

If you want to practice your craft and add a layer of purpose that you can feel good about, Senior Living offers that and so much more. I come to work feeling I make a difference every day and I am not just depended on to show up, but I’m also valued!

What is the best part about working at The Mariner or at Northbridge?

Knowing that what I do is essential to so many people in the community. I truly enjoy the collaboration, comradery and laughter with associates at all levels.

Northbridge does a really great job of showing appreciation. They give you piece of mind with the level at which they demonstrate accountability to the residents, associates, and people who come and go. Another big benefit is that there is so much room to grow professionally within the company. They’ve also made it very easy for a person to transfer into different positions and departments if there is vacancy and the person qualifies. There’s no one thing, so many positives come to mind.
