On October 20th we celebrate International Chef’s Day – an opportunity to recognize the many positive impacts, inspiring stories and all the joy that chefs bring to our lives.

International Chef’s Day was created by the late, Chef Dr. Bill Gallagher in 2004 to bring people together to recognize, educate and inspire the next generation about the joys of cooking, the importance of healthy eating and the growing need for sustainability.

At Northbridge, we are celebrating International Chef’s Day by learning a little bit more about our talented Culinary Directors.

Chef: Peter Delp
Community: Laurentide at Mashpee Commons

What is one of your most popular meals among residents at Laurentide at Mashpee Commons?
At Laurentide, you can’t go wrong with fresh baked cod. Fish and chips are a close second!

What is your favorite meal to prepare for residents?
I love trying out new desserts with residents. I recently served a peanut cake with chocolate ganache and crushed peanuts, they loved it! I also enjoy preparing our slow roasted items like BBQ, pulled pork or pot roast.

Advice for anyone in the Culinary industry who is thinking about making the switch to senior living?
It is a great avenue to take in commercial cooking. The challenges and pressures are different than a restaurant or hotel setting. There are many unique challenges, but the rewards are just as great as the challenges.

What is your favorite meal to enjoy?
I’m easy to please, a straightforward French style omelet. However, having grown up in the PA Dutch Country, I wouldn’t refuse a side of scrapple with it.

What is your favorite part about being a Chef?
I enjoy the fact that I can learn something new every day. Either about myself, someone else, or cooking in general.

What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?

Working to satisfy the residents. Whether that means meeting one on one to discuss individual needs or working with a committee to really target what they want and need from my Culinary team. You don’t always get to do that in restaurants or hotels.

Northbridge residents enjoy three Eat Fresh, Eat Local Meals every day served in our community dining rooms. Our fresh and local foods come from growers throughout New England as well as our own community gardens. Northbridge strives to be SeniorGreen by planting and harvesting vegetables, right from our own back yards! Click here to learn about a few other SeniorGreen projects we’re working on!

At Northbridge we allow our chefs to get creative and share their passion for cooking with our residents without restrictions. We know one of the best parts about cooking, is the passion put into each dish. We are lucky to have very talented chefs working at our communities and constantly showing off their culinary skills and creativity.
