How long have you been working in Senior Living and what first made you interested in the field?
I’ve been working in senior living for about six years now. Previously, my entire career was spent in the restaurant world. I was looking for something that still let me be creative with food and provided a better work-life balance. What drew me in was the opportunity to build relationships with the residents and really make an impact on their daily lives.
What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?
My favorite part is the relationships with the residents. You get to know them on a personal level, their preferences, stories, and shared connections with food. It’s rewarding to see how a well prepared meal can improve someone’s day.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Culinary Director?
It’s more than just cooking. You’re managing a budget, leading a team, training staff, and maintaining a high level of quality. It’s getting your hands dirty and being willing to jump in and help at any level.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?
Be patient and open to learning. It’s very different from restaurants and in order to be successful you need to understand residents needs come first.
What is the best part about working at Avita of Stroudwater or at Northbridge?
The support and culture. There’s a real emphasis on quality and strong teamwork across all departments. We all have the same goal of giving residents the best experience possible.
What is your favorite meal to prepare for the residents?
One of my favorites to prepare (and to eat), is the Stuffed Turkey Casserole. It takes the best of Thanksgiving and puts it all into one dish and is perfect for memory care – click here for the recipe!
