What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?

We paid frequent visits to my grandparents growing up, despite living 300 miles apart. I remember sitting next to my grandpa in his memory care neighborhood while he painted by numbers and noting how well the nursing and engagement associates knew him. They understood how to approach him in conversation, guide through an activity, and offer him concrete next steps. I took a winding road to working in senior living, but I think those moments pointed me in this direction.

How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?

I am celebrating 5 years in senior living this month! When my career as a museum professional became fully remote in March 2020, I started to understand how important it is to me to be around others and feel purposeful. My then-boyfriend, now-husband was an Engagement Associate in our Farmington community. He knew I was craving a change and asked if I had any interest in becoming a Concierge. I had no idea that part-time evening position would become full-time, lead me to the Engagement team, and ultimately into Sales!

What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?

I have regular opportunities to solve problems, be silly, write, reminisce, and catch up with folks. There is never a dull moment in Senior Living.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Sales Director?

May I offer two things? First, no two families are alike so being an active listener is truly top priority. Second, there is no such thing as a typical day!

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?

My advice is to remember we are people helping people. If you feel a sense of purpose through lending a helping hand, this is the field for you.

What keeps you invested in the field?

I learn something new every day from my wildly intelligent, creative, and dedicated colleagues. Their investment to our community and their drive to find solutions keeps me invested.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I walk by the dining room every evening at peak dinner time and hear constant chatter. Residents have met some of their dearest friends because they live here; they invite family to join them here for events and meals. Dinner serves as my daily reminder that this is my purpose: to help people envision what the next chapter of their lives can look like and invite them to the table.

What is the best part about working at Skybrooke or at Northbridge?

In these past 5 years I changed careers, got married, moved twice, and had two kids. Our residents and team have walked through these changes with me, and many ask me to share photos of my babies every day! Forgive me for sounding like a broken record – it’s all about the people and our connections with each other.

What is your best tip for a family starting their Senior Living search?

Keep in mind that this is what we do every day. Your questions will not annoy me, so bring your list or tell me you aren’t sure where to even start. It is my responsibility to share accurate, useful information so you have the tools to make an informed, intentional decision.
