What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?

I have always had a soft spot for the elderly population. There are so many stories and so much wisdom behind their years of life. So many residents have been through hardships, wars, and the loss of their loved ones. They prove every day, life goes on and they make the best out of it, as well as continue to enjoy life in this new stage. They teach me patience, understanding, and acceptance of one another.

How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?

I have worked in senior living communities since right after college. I started my journey as a dietetic technician, CNA, engagement associate and for the last four years as Resident Engagement Director. Working in these positions has allowed me to appreciate everyone’s role in the way that the communities operate.

What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?

My favorite part about working in senior living is knowing I’m making a change in people’s lives, being there for residents when their families can’t be, is priceless. Bringing smiles to residents and learning from them is a blessing. We have a such a special position where we are able to extend our hands to people who need us.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Resident Engagement Director?

One thing I would like people to know about being Resident Engagement Director is that behind every fun activity, there is a lot of planning, researching, negotiating and thought put into it. Our population changes so it is important to be flexible and design activities that work and are appropriate to the people that live here now.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?

To people that are thinking about starting career in the senior living, working with seniors is an extremely rewarding career. You go to bed fulfilled knowing you made someone happy. It is a privilege to be part of so many families, listen to so many stories.. If you are thinking about starting a career in senior living, think no more. Go for it!

What keeps you invested in the field?

I stay invested in the field for the connections I have made at work. Between my coworkers, leaders and most importantly , the residents, it is a joy to come to work every day. It is truly a different feeling when you see everyone working together and truly work as a community to make sure residents feel happy, and respected at their home.

What is your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part of the job is spending time with residents and connections with their families. A large part of the “engagement” is enjoying simple moments with the residents. All it takes is a conversation, short walk around the community, having a cookie or coffee, or listening to a piece of music by their favorite composer to assure a resident we are there for them, they are not alone. Those moments make residents happy and bring comfort to the families as well.

What is the best part about working at Skybrooke at Simsbury or at Northbridge?

The best part of working at Skybrooke at Simsbury is the fact we are a team and want to be successful together. It’s an amazing feeling being supported not only by the immediate coworkers but also by the other Northbridge Communities. It has been an honor to be a part of this community.

What is your favorite program to do with the residents?

My very favorite activities are cooking / baking demonstrations. Lots of giggles, reminiscing, and great food! Residents are eager to share recipes, mix, sift, lick their fingers and spoons just as they remembered doing it with their grandparents and children. Lots of mess and tons of fun!
