How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?

When I moved from England in 2001 with my husband and three and five year-old boys, I didn’t have a work permit, so I filled some of my time volunteering at the Council on Aging in Marshfield. It was there that I was paired up with a feisty woman named Dorothy. She was blind , living by herself, and had no surviving family members. I would take her out for hair appointments, lunch, etc. once or twice a week. I found it very rewarding helping her.

What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?

Around 20 years ago my friend opened a Senior Care Agency, and because of my relationship with Dorothy, asked me to work for her company as a companion visiting seniors in their homes, which I did for a few years. I enjoyed the variety of meeting different seniors and hearing about their life experiences, and the flexibility of choosing the hours I worked to fit in with my family.

What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?

Being a Resident Engagement Director is a fun job. I get to  find out about each resident’s likes, dislikes, interests, and hobbies, and incorporate all of that into our programming.

What keeps you invested in the field?

It’s easy to stay invested in the field as each day brings different challenges. My favorite thing to do is is helping a resident succeed in having a great day.

What is your favorite program to do with the residents?

Team Trivia Happy Hour is one of my favorite programs. The residents look forward to it every week, they play in teams with their friends and they are very competitive!
