How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?

I have worked in Senior Living for 19 years! My first job was doing payroll and accounts payable as a Business Office Assistant. After a few years I started taking over the resident’s billing. Eventually I became a regional Business Office Director and oversaw other business offices. I got to do a lot of training as a regional which I really enjoyed.

What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?

I worked with children in a preschool setting right out of high school. I love kids and always thought I would pursue early childhood education, but one day I was randomly asked to interview for an office position at a nursing home. I got the job and have embraced every opportunity to learn new things and take on new challenges. I still love kids, but after having a couple of my own I’ll think I’ll stick to this demographic.

What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?

The connections I make with residents and their families. I lost my dad to Alzheimer’s Disease in 2020 and having been through that, I can truly relate to what families might be experiencing. I’m not just someone who works in Senior Living. I’m the daughter of someone who was placed in a senior care home. I know what it is like to be on both sides of this industry.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Business Office Director?

I don’t just sit in an office all day. I try to get up and be in the community each day. In nicer weather, I’ll join the residents on a walk outside. I even have the advantage of attending marketing events out in the field with our Sales Director.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?

Go for it! Spending time with and caring for Seniors can be very rewarding.

What keeps you invested in the field?

I love the difference I can make in someone’s life. The routine tasks of a maintenance director can be done anywhere and in many different fields. Being a part of a senior living community is different than anything else out there.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I like to think of myself as a people person. I like to help and guide people. I am proud of the care and support that the staff at Laurentide provide for our residents.

What is the best part about working at Laurentide at Mashpee Commons or at Northbridge?

Establishing relationships with the associates and residents. When staff are hired here, I am one of the first people they meet and talk with. This is my chance to get to know them and start a sort of bond with them as if to ensure their transition will be as smooth as possible. The same goes for residents. Moving into an assisted living is a huge step for any senior. I like to be just another person to help ease the transition.
