  1. What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?
I was raised in a family of caregivers that worked in Social Services. My dad was a nurse and my mother a care aid. My first job at 15 was in a local nursing home  working in housekeeping and the kitchen. I really enjoyed spending time with the residents and hearing their stories. It developed my passion for working with people and I went on to attend North Shore Community College after high school where I got my associate’s degree in Occupational Therapy.
  2. How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?
After graduation I went on to work in a variety of fields, but primarily those with developmental disabilities or mental illness. I ended up managing several group homes (at one point 11) and having a large population of seniors I decided to further my education, by taking classes in gerontology
  3. What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?
My favorite thing about working in the field is spending time with my residents and learning their stories.
  4. What is one thing you wish everyone new about being a Avita Director?
Being an Avita Director can be a challenge but keep it simple. Take the time to get to know your residents and families. Music is so instrumental in providing comfort, be sure to know their preferences.
  5. What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?
Build connections with your residents and remember every connection can make a positive difference.
  6. What keeps you invested in the field?
Seeing the joy or comfort I can bring to my residents with dementia. The world has become very overwhelming and confusing. When they smile, say thank you, or applaud, it just makes my day.
  7. What is your favorite part about your job?
The best part of working at Avita of Newburyport is the level of genuine care I see the staff has for the residents and their co-workers.
  8. Can you share one tip about Avita residents and the holidays?
Families are always welcome to join us and we hope they do for our family friendly event on Sunday December 15th for decorating Gingerbread men and an afternoon of music. Also join us for our family support group on December 10th where we will discuss tips for the holidays.
