Celebrating National Culinary Arts Month with Matt Tremblay
In celebration of National Culinary Arts Month we talked with Northbridge Director of Procurement, Matt Tremblay. Matt was recently promoted from Senior Culinary Director at Avita of Wells to Director of Procurement and now works as part of our Home Office team. Get to know more about Matt and how he came to be the chef he is today!
- When did you first discover your love of cooking?
My mother is a chef, growing up I was exposed to cooking at an early age. It was only natural for me to go into the culinary field and follow in my mother’s footsteps. Today I enjoy cooking with my sons. - What was your first job in the culinary world?
My first job was doing dishes at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. My mom was the Executive Chef and I can remember being 14 years old and seeing all the college kids bringing their empty trays back to the dish slide. It always amazed me how much food they would eat! - What is your favorite part of being a chef?
I love making people smile. When I see someone enjoying the food I created, I can’t help but watch their expression. Seeing them smile and enjoy my food makes it all worth it. The same is true with our residents, when you can find a way to give someone living with dementia something they can enjoy we are improving their quality of life. There is nothing better than that! - What is your favorite dish to cook? What is your favorite dish to eat?
I love cooking comfort food: a nice warm beef stew on a cold Maine day. My favorite thing to eat is any smoked meat! Low and slow on the smoker will always be the best way to eat. - What is the best part about being a chef in senior living?
Northbridge is known for our Eat Fresh, Eat Local Signature Program. Cooking from scratch is so important. Clean food that our residents can enjoy has many health benefits. Using local farm to table items and having a company that supports that is second to none. - What is one piece of advice you would share with new or aspiring chefs?
Don’t let the everyday frustrations of a kitchen get you down. The chef life is not easy but if you keep at it there are a lot of exciting things you can do. Keep pushing for the stars!
