How long have you been working in senior living and what first made you interested in the field?
It will be 23 years this month. When I returned to Maine, I was not specifically looking to work in senior living but now, reflecting back on my career path, one thing at the root of my previous jobs involved connecting people in meaningful ways. Working here gives me an opportunity to continue that underlying thread but to do it on a more personal and interactive level than before.
What is your favorite part about working in senior living?
The wide circle of people I get to see each day – you truly get to see multiple generations of family interacting all the time.
What is one thing you wish everyone new about being a Business Office Director?
The ripple (or butterfly) effect that one seemingly small decision or movement by someone else (colleague, resident or family member) can have and how it may have a major – if unintended – impact on the rest of the workday or week that completely shifts your focus and priorities.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in senior living?
Be mindful of the impact you have on seniors every single day. Keep them and their well-being at the center; when you are with them, focus on them and leave the rest behind in those moments. You have to have some level of selflessness in order to succeed in senior living.
