Avita Memory Care Program Director Spotlight – Heather LaFramboise

Avita Program Director: Heather LaFramboise, CTRS
Community: Avita of Brunswick
How long have you been working in Senior Living and what first made you interested in the field?
I have been working in senior living, specifically Memory Care, for the last 15 years! Prior to my role as the Avita Program Director at Avita of Brunswick, I worked as a Recreational Therapist (CTRS) in a long term memory care community in Falmouth, Maine. Senior living is a career that crossed my path when I wasn’t expecting it, at just the right time. I was getting ready to graduate college and a full time Recreational Therapist position became available at a memory care senior living community, and after my interview, I knew in my heart that this was my calling!
What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?
I absolutely love working with the residents! Being able to build relationships and make connections with the folks who call our community home is so rewarding for me. I just love finding ways to help everyone residing here at Avita of Brunswick live the very best life they can while they are here with us.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being an Avita Program Director?
Being an Avita Director means wearing many hats, both literally and figuratively. From running engaging programs to facilitating support groups, dressing up for fun themed days and being a friend to a resident in need, it is a guarantee that the job responsibilities are never going to be the same twice!
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?
Go into your career with all of your heart and celebrate the little things just as much as the big ones. It could be having a good laugh with someone, or finding a pair of missing glasses, all of the little things add up to big things in the end!
What is the best part about working at Avita of Brunswick or at Northbridge?
Being able to be a part of the Avita of Brunswick team since the day we opened our doors has been a tremendous experience. Watching the community grow into what it has become has been so fulfilling and rewarding. It is amazing to work with such a great team of people who really want to do the best they can to create a supportive community for the residents and their family members as well as a fun and engaging place to work for the team. I so appreciate that Northbridge sets us up to be successful in creating such an incredible place for people to live and to work. An added bonus to working at Avita of Brunswick was also that I had the opportunity to be a part of my grandmother’s care team for her final years. To experience the love and care that comes from the entire Avita of Brunswick team really made our community a special place for me and my family.
What is one thing you would tell families moving their loved one into memory care to make the transition easier?
Choosing to live in a memory care community is a big decision for both you and your loved one. Be sure to give both yourself and your loved one time to adjust and know that we are all in this together.
