What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?

I had a per diem job doing unit turns and painting at Stafford Hill, this was my first experience in senior living and I found that I really enjoyed being a part of the residents daily lives and being able to help them out.

How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?

I have been working in senior living for 11 years, my  first job in the industry was the per diem maintenance job at Stafford Hill.

What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?

The connections I make with the residents are very special. I love being able to assist them and be a friend to them at this stage of their lives.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Maintenance Director?

It’s a 24 hour a day job that keeps you on your toes at all times as you never are quite sure what you will be dealing with each day,. Whether it’s a resident request for help with something in their room, or a heating unit that has gone down in the middle of winter.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?

Make sure you are in it for the people, it is a very rewarding and challenging career. If you love the people and love helping them the work will be much easier.

What keeps you invested in the field?

I love the difference I can make in someone’s life. The routine tasks of a maintenance director can be done anywhere and in many different fields. Being a part of a senior living community is different than anything else out there.

What is your favorite part about your job?

The great team of people I work with every day and the wonderful residents that live here.

What is the best part about working at Laurelwood at The Pinehills or at Northbridge?

It is a great company from the top down that genuinely cares about its residents and staff. Laurelwood has the best team in the business in my opinion, and Northbridge does a great job of providing great care for the residents and families and is always thinking of ways to better support and take care of their employees.

What is your favorite way to help a new family during the move in process?

The most common thing we do for new residents is hanging pictures or setting up a television. Introducing ourselves and letting them know we are here to assist them with all their needs is always a welcome relief as move in days can be a little overwhelming for families.
