Northbridge Talent Seeker and Keeper Linda Mumford is always looking for the top talent when it comes to recruiting directors for Northbridge communities.

We asked Linda to share her tips for how to set yourself apart when it comes to applying for the job and going through the interview process.

If you are getting ready to start the search or are currently searching for a director level job in senior living, these tips are for you.

1. Resume

  • Keep your resume well organized and easy to read.
  • Feature strong bullet points but don’t get bogged down with descriptions – save that for the interview process.
  • Keep it simple – you will be able to elaborate on past jobs and experience throughout the interview process.

2. Cover letter

  • Describe why you want the position and don’t be afraid to show your personality.

Note from Linda – be sure the cover letter is addressed to the correct company – especially if you are sending the same one with multiple applications.

3. Interviews

  • Review the job description and be prepared with questions specific to the role you are applying to.
  • Be prepared to discuss leaving past positions, gaps in work history, positions you loved, challenging situations and your work relationship with coworkers and supervisors.
  • If you are onsite at a community the team will be watching how you engage with residents and associates – don’t be afraid to make small connections and share personal stories.

Note from Linda – stay away from negativity when discussing past employment.

4. Do your Homework

  • Research the company, look at their website and Facebook page, come to the interview with discussion points on what you noticed.
  • Ask questions related to the potential position and about the community.

5. Follow Up

  • Send a personalized email to everyone involved in the interview process and include references to topics discussed.

Note from Linda– the follow up email is a great place to include any last minute thoughts about why you are the best candidate for the job.

When it comes to hiring for community directors, Linda looks for people who have a true passion for working with seniors and who will do well be doing good.
