Graduation season is a time to celebrate accomplishments, reflect on meaningful experiences, and look forward to what comes next. This spring, Autumn Glen at Dartmouth marked the occasion in a special way by hosting its first-ever graduation celebration for eight associates graduating from vocational schools, high school, and college.

Residents, families, associates, and community leaders gathered to recognize the graduates, many of whom have become familiar and beloved faces throughout Autumn Glen. With so many people eager to show their support, the crowd filled the programming room and extended into the hallway.

The ceremony began with a traditional entrance to “Pomp and Circumstance,” followed by a commencement speech from Mary Silvia, Avita Memory Care Program Director. Nicole Perrault, Resident Care Director; Jennifer Gelinas, Resident Engagement Director; and Chris Flagg, Culinary Director, also shared remarks and memories about the graduates. Executive Director Erin Fowler closed the ceremony before each student received a special Autumn Glen diploma and a commemorative handshake from the leadership team.

Afterward, the celebration continued in the Good Dog Café, where residents and associates gathered for photos, cake, balloons, and plenty of congratulations.

Celebrating What’s Next

The graduating class included seven high school seniors and one college graduate, with six students participating in co-op programs through Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, and Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Their next chapters will take them in many different directions. Graduates plan to continue their education at Bridgewater State University, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and Bristol Community College, with career aspirations ranging from nursing and occupational therapy to surgical and cardiothoracic care.

While their futures are exciting, the celebration also offered a chance to look back on just how much the students have grown during their time at Autumn Glen.

“This class had a really special impact, both because of the sheer number of them and because of the individuals that make up the group,” shared Mary Silvia. “Though many started out somewhat shy and reserved, they quickly gained their confidence and became extremely ingrained into our community.”

Mary recalled the many ways the students became part of everyday life at Autumn Glen—from cooking dishes for staff potlucks and wearing inflatable animal costumes at themed parties to dancing with memory care residents and even spending the night at the community during a recent blizzard.

For many of the graduates, those everyday moments are what they will remember most. When reflecting on their experiences at Autumn Glen, they shared a common highlight: the meaningful relationships they formed with residents.

The graduation celebration was about more than diplomas and what comes next. It was an opportunity for residents and associates to celebrate young people they have watched learn, grow, and become part of their community—and for the graduates to recognize the friendships and memories they’ll carry with them into their next chapter.
