Maintenance Director Spotlight – EJ Rosario

Maintenance Director: EJ Rosario
Community: The Landing at Saco Bay
What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?
What first made me interested in senior living and memory care specifically was my grandmother being diagnosed with dementia. Watching my family struggle to provide care for her and ultimately looking into additional care made me interested in learning more about the people and places that care for our loved ones.
How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?
Becoming the Maintenance Director for The Landing at Saco Bay is my first role specifically in senior living and memory care. I have worked in construction and property maintenance at other independent or assisted living communities in the past as a contractor. I have been in construction and maintenance for over 15 years.
What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?
My favorite part about working in senior living is being able to give back and improve the lives of residents. Even if its as simple as spending some time and having a conversation, or fixing something small that has been bothering them, it makes my day to be able to help residents in any way possible.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Maintenance Director?
One thing I wish everyone knew about being a Maintenance Director is how much we actually need to know to be successful in our roles. From things like patching, painting and electrical to HVAC and plumbing. From tech and IT to fire and life safety systems and even appliance knowledge, there is so much we need to know about every part of our buildings in and out. We also work with other departments from culinary to care to make sure our buildings and everything in them run smoothly.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?
One piece of advice I would share with someone looking to enter the field of senior living is that it is just as important to take care of yourself as it is the residents. This job can be taxing and you can’t pour from an empty glass. Make sure you take care of yourself so you can give the residents the care they deserve.
What keeps you invested in the field?
What keeps me invested in the field is the knowledge that this field is projected to be growing vastly in the next decade. I hope to grow with The Landing and Northbridge to meet the growing needs of the population.
What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part of my job is seeing my work improve the daily life of residents and staff. I really enjoy being able to fix things for people so they can live and work in the best possible environment we can provide.
What is the best part about working at The Landing at Saco Bay or at Northbridge?
The best part about working for The Landing and Northbridge for me is the team I get to work with. I have worked a lot of jobs for a lot of different employers and I can say without a doubt Northbridge has some of the best and brightest working here. They all truly care about their job, each resident, and each other.
What is one thing you want families to know as they’re moving their loved one in?
My favorite way to help a new family with their move is to help them get everything moved into the room and set up just the way they want. Moving day can be very stressful for the residents and their family so I try to do everything I can to lighten their load and make their new apartment feel as close to home as fast as possible. That way they can spend more of the day enjoying time together and less time moving items and setting things up.
