Sales Director: Stephanie Deschaine
Community: Riverbend at Farmington
What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?
Honestly? At first, I wasn’t interested in working in senior living! My husband approached me about a job opportunity, and I thought he was joking! I had gone to college to be an art teacher and had always worked with children. However, I found very quickly that Senior Living is a very fulfilling career, and I fell in love with my residents!
How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?
My husband and I were looking for a change. He saw an ad in the paper about the opportunity to be live in managers at a senior living community, and we thought, “Why not?!”. We were hired and quickly moved into the community with our then three-year-old son in 2012. My husband and I ran the community alongside of two other couples, and my son became the official In-Residence Grandson!
What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?
I love laughing with my residents! We have the best time together! Taking time out of my day to sit and talk with residents, or do a puzzle together is so fulfilling, and the wisdom they impart is wonderful. My favorite piece of advice was shared by one of my first residents named Charlotte. She said, “Stephanie, it is ok to grow older, but don’t you ever get old.”
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Sales Director?
When my youngest son was six, I asked him what I did for a living, and his response was “Make phone calls and get checks!” Although that is true, building a relationship and quickly earning the trust of seniors and their families during the sales process is not as easy as it may seem. However, when you genuinely care and show empathy and have respect, becoming a trusted advisor is simple.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?
Not only are you entering the healthcare field, but senior living is also the service industry. Our residents deserve both quality care and exemplary service. Working in Senior Living requires a service-oriented mindset and an others-focused attitude. You must hold yourself to extremely high standards, because our residents deserve nothing but the best!
What keeps you invested in the field?
During tours, families and future residents often share their challenges and concerns with me. Once they move in, I witness how the community addresses these issues, and time and time again, I see our residents rediscover their purpose, make friends, and thrive.
What is your favorite part about your job?
The short answer is, “My residents, of course!” However, often, I get emotional when answering this question because I consider it a true honor to assist seniors and their families in transitioning to senior living. Choosing senior living is one of the most significant decisions they will make in this chapter of their lives, and they place their trust in me to guide them through it.
What is the best part about working at Riverbend or at Northbridge?
Our growing team! At Riverbend, we’re building a strong leadership team, and it’s inspiring to see the positive growth and progress. As we continue to strengthen our organization, it’s clear that this growth will help us better serve our residents and create a thriving community.
What is your best tip for a family starting their Senior Living search?
I have often said that this process is like trying to take a drink out of a firehose! There are dozens of senior living options nearby, and when families decide to tour everywhere, it can muddy the water and make things even more confusing. I suggest doing some research on the community websites and calling the communities and get some initial information first. Speak with the Sales Directors and then visit your favorite three.
