Sales Director: Alison Rice
Community: Avita of Newburyport
What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?
After two positions in hospice, both as a social worker and as an account executive, I had the opportunity to spend time in assisted living communities. I saw a career in memory care assisted living as a great opportunity to use my social work skills to be a resource to families who are struggling with a very challenging problem. I was eager to help provide people with a very helpful solution.
How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?
Avita of Newburyport was my first and only job in senior living. It will be six great years in July 2025.
What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?
Helping families navigate through the process of bringing their loved ones to memory care and witnessing the surprise and relief as they see how quickly the residents acclimate to their new routine. I also appreciate watching how the caregiver(s) can get back to taking care of themselves to meet their own needs/interests/desires.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Sales Director?
Nothing is more important than the trust that is made with the family member(s) making this enormous decision. The role is SO MUCH MORE than sales!
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?
Be flexible with your expectations, both in the time it takes people to decide on next steps and also with your availability when responding to their needs. Sometimes the best time for a family is an evening or weekend, it’s so important to work in the timeframe that is best for them.
What keeps you invested in the field?
Building and maintaining relationships with residents, their families, and my team members.
What is your favorite part about your job?
The fact that I NEVER get the “Sunday scaries” when thinking about work the next day. I love to be here.
What is the best part about working at Avita of Newburyport or at Northbridge?
Avita of Newburyport has earned a wonderful reputation in the Northshore due to a very high level of care and I feel very proud to be part of the team who has worked so hard to earn that reputation. I get to “sell” a service that I am very confident about!
What is your best tip for a family starting their Senior Living search?
Request to speak with current family members about their experiences at the community and ask about the longevity of the leadership and care teams.
