Dementia & Harmful Flowers – A List to Take to Your Florist
As Mother’s Day approaches, we wanted to talk about some best practices on harmful flowers. Flowers are one of the main ways people express love and appreciation, especially on Mother’s Day. Sending flowers to our residents is certainly welcomed, but there are a few things you should know before sending them.
There can be toxic flowers that are found in arrangements; we are here to let you know which ones you should look out for. This is important because residents experiencing symptoms of dementia can mistake the beautiful colors and aromas for something edible. To be on the safe side, see below which are harmful flowers as well as those that are harmless.
Potentially harmful flowers to those with dementia or Alzheimer’s include:
- Amaryllis
- Boxwood
- Calla lilies
- Crocus
- Cyclamen
- Daffodil
- Dumb cane (dieffenbachia)
- Eucalyptus
- Foxglove
- Holly
- Hyacinth
- Hydrangea
- Irises
- Juniper
- Lantana
- Mistletoe
- Morning glory
- Oleander
- Pothos ivy
- Rhododendron
- Sago palm
- Schefflera
- Tulips with bulb
But don’t worry, there are plenty of varieties of flowers that are both beautiful and safe.
Some lovely non-harmful flowers include:
- Aster
- Borage
- Carnations
- Cornflower
- Dahlias
- Daylilies
- Gardenias
- Hibiscus
- Hollyhock
- Hosta
- Lavender
- Nasturtium
- Pansies
- Roses
- Sunflower
- Violets
- Zinna
If you plan on sending flowers, please inform the flower shop that you are sending the arrangement to a memory care community. Ask which flower varieties will be used and advise against any that can be toxic.
Best wishes for a happy and healthy Mother’s Day!
