Executive Director: Jessica Poulin

What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?
When I was in college, my advisor encouraged me to apply for an accounting position at the corporate office of a local senior living provider. Though I wasn’t offered that position, I was offered the opportunity to train with an administrator opening a new memory care in MidCoast Maine. I was so fortunate to learn all the operations and processes from regulatory to resident care and everything in between before I had even graduated from college. From there I was hooked. I never looked back!
How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?
I have been working in Senior Living for almost 18 years. I mentioned more about my first job in the questions above!
What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?
Senior living is one of the most vulnerable populations and I love that I can make a difference and help them by giving back to the generations who helped raise and guide today’s generation.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being an Executive Director?
Our roles are not as transparent as we would like them to be! We often have to make decisions based upon so many factors that we cannot necessarily share due to confidentiality and regulation. As an Executive Director, when making challenging decisions, we always take into consideration the safety and well-being of our residents and our community first.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?
Pace yourself and as difficult as it may be at times, find a home life/work life balance that allows you to take care of yourself. You will not be able to help others if you have not helped yourself first.
What keeps you invested in the field?
The desire to continue enriching the lives of our seniors, with the highest level of integrity.
What is your favorite part about your job?
That I get to interact with and support the residents in various capacities. My role as the Executive Director allows me to participate and support all departments–often interacting with our amazing residents.
What is the best part about working at The Landing at Saco Bay or at Northbridge?
There’s actually so many great aspects to working at Northbridge, I could not choose just one. The residents are so kind, and all associates that I have interacted with are wonderful people—who truly care and support each other, and not just the residents and families.
What is one tip you have to ensure new residents and families feel welcome and supported from day one?
Always introduce yourself to as many people as possible. It is so important to maintain positive and open lines of communication. Positive communication builds trust and solid relationships, and you never know when circumstances arise that you will be able to support more successfully if you already have a good connection built prior to.
