Culinary Director: Jose Lopez
Community: Stonebridge at Burlington
What first made you interested in working in Senior Living?
My father worked in senior living, and I got my very first job during high school working in the dining room in the very same community as my dad.
How long have you been working in Senior Living and what was your first job in this field?
I’ve been working approximately 23 years in the industry. My first job was working in the dining room as a server. I’ve only really worked for 2 companies so far!
What is your favorite part about working in Senior Living?
My favorite part is taking part in making a daily difference in the lives of our residents through food and service and circling around individuals who like to achieve the same goal.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about being a Culinary Director?
Being a Culinary Director is similar in being a musical conductor. There are many simultaneous moving parts, and my primary role is to direct how everything goes. It is really astonishing how it all comes together and gets presented as a whole.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone thinking of starting a career in Senior Living?
To keep in mind that it is important to take care of your coworkers and employees to the best of your abilities. Building a great work atmosphere is appreciated by both the staff and the residents.
What keeps you invested in the field?
I keep learning as I go. I manage a department based on everything I’ve learned from others. It’s also great to see others learning and growing in the field too. I am always happy to take part in someone’s career growth, even if it’s a small contribution.
What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part is taking ideas and trends found in the restaurant industry and shaping them for our residents to try! We have an array of great vendors to help us achieve that goal, and it’s exciting for the staff to take on the challenge.
What is the best part about working at Stonebridge or at Northbridge?
The best part is Northbridge having tailored culinary programs that meet the preferences of each individual community and meeting/sharing ideas with other Culinary Directors. We have partnered with top tier industry vendors, have dedicated staff to implement rich and vibrant menus, and have beautiful dining rooms for residents to come down and receive service. It really is something special that I am proud to partake in!
What is your favorite meal to prepare for the residents?
I always cave in to a dish that has risotto as a base. It’s super versatile, fulfilling, and presents great with all sorts of meats and vegetables!
